Must-Have Hair Tools

The key to having great hair is having great tools and products.

Some of the items that you will definitely want to keep on-hand are heat protectant spray, a round brush, hair dryer, flat iron, and curling iron/wand.

Heat protectant spray is a MUST! You cannot put such high heat on your hair without damaging it. This spray will help protect the hair cuticle and prevent split ends. Some good brands that I love are Chi, DryBar, and Moroccanoil and they can be found at Ulta or Sephora.

A round brush is a staple in your bag of tricks for a bouncy, salon-inspired blowout. I like to keep two sizes handy: one large round brush to blow out large sections by the roots and one smaller one to flip the ends. These can be found at any local drugstore like CVS or a beauty supply store. I prefer to use Revlon round brushes because I find they are good quality, but the brand here is not super important. Buy what you like!

Investing in a good hair dryer is another must-have item. The hair dryer will help seal the hair cuticle, which eliminates frizz and creates a sleek look that can be worn as is or styled further. Make sure to use the attachment nozzle to focus the projection of hot air. This will help you achieve a frizz-free blowout by directing the hair down along the brush. A good brand is the Revlon Shine Booster Hair Dryer and it can be found at your local drugstore, without costing you a fortune. A higher-end choice that I recommend is the DryBar Buttercup Dryer, which is definitely a pricy item, but it is so worth it.

A flat iron can be used to perfect a blowout or tame slept-on wet hair. A good flat iron will give you straight hair with minimal frizz. Personally, I find that straightening my hair after blowing it out tends to make it smoother and less frizzy. The type of flat iron you have is important: ceramic and titanium plates are safer for your hair. They are less harsh on the hair cuticle, which is less damaging, and result in a smoother, straighter look. The ideal temperature to work at is 365°F because it will not burn you hair, just be careful to not go above that too often. I recommend Revlon irons because there are many kinds of plates offered, so you can choose what’s best for you. Plus, they aren’t too expensive! These can also be found at drugstores like CVS.

What’s a flat iron without a curling iron? These two are essentials for me. A curling iron or curling wand are great for achieving a range of looks from beach waves to tight curls. The difference between the two is that the curling iron has a metal clamp on the side and the curling wand does not. These are my favorite tools for sure, I am a huge fan of curls and waves. Once again, make sure the heat of the iron is not much above 365°F to protect your natural hair. I like to use Revlon curling irons and a set of detachable wands from Amazon. Since your hair is not being pressed between two plates, the brands here can range. The heat is more dispersed and not always directed on delicate strands. Definitely a less damaging option than straightening.

What are you waiting for? You know what you need to do so go get started!

xoxo,

Michelle
